Unbelievably, Silent Hill 2 is now 20 years old, with Silent Hill 3 now well into its teenage years — having been released in The HD Collection gives the games a visual upgrade and also newly recorded voice acting, but leaves the gameplay untouched, sadly.

As Limbo showed, fancy 3D visuals and FMV are definitely not needed to make a game truly scary; in fact, Lone Survivor proves that pixel art can do the job just fine. This 2D indie psychological horror game features a protagonist who wears a surgical mask — and is the only survivor of an infection which has turned the population into mutants. Barring the mutation element, the setting perhaps feels even scarier and more powerful amidst the COVID situation.

Interestingly, Silent Hill: Homecoming was deemed so extreme from a violence and gore point of view that Australian and German censors refused to allow the game to be sold uncut. Citing sequences such as characters being drilled into and bisected yuck!

Despite the arguably excessive gore, Silent Hill: Homecoming is another title in the series that has an effectively oppressive atmosphere — and just as psychologically disturbing as other Silent Hill games. That is to say: it really gets inside your head, so much so that it was an absolute must for the Best PS3 Horror Games List.

Metacritic reviews for Silent Hill: Homecoming were a mixed bag in comparison to previous titles in the franchise, but it retained many iconic series elements to create one of the best horror games on the PS3. The Japanese have a knack for nailing creepy horror games, and Siren: Blood Curse is no exception. This re-imagining of the cult hit PS2 title blends elements from its sequel to create a riveting and frightening survival horror experience. The game's heavy use of darkness, de-saturated colors, and film grit marry well to the bone-chilling sound design and disturbing narrative that permeate the entire play experience. The sequel to the seminal FPS horror classic F. It also took the storyline into much deeper and darker psychological territory.

Principal antagonist Alma returns to wreak havoc on those she believed wronged her, but her enthusiastic focus on the main character soon leads to some disturbing scenes that are as unsettling as they are effective. Based on the comic book of the same name, The Darkness put players in the shoes of Jackie Estacado, a mob hit-man who turns into a one-man wrecking crew after discovering that a demonic entity has inhabited his bloodline for generations.
