Finally, and probably most importantly, many of the changes are those which have been suggested by readers and reviewers of the previous editions; this feedback has been invaluable to the authors and we now hope will be equally valuable to readers of the new edition. In this edition we wish to express our particular gratitude to Dr John Clark and Miss Lois Hague for the very elegant new illustrations in Chapter 2.

This comprehensive and rigorously referenced textbook will be a vital resource in print and online for all practising clinicians. Edited by a team of four leading figures in the field, whose clinical and scientific backgrounds collectively cover the whole spectrum of Obstetrics and Gynaecology with particular expertise in fetomaternal medicine and obstetrics, gynaecological oncology, urogynaecology, and reproductive medicine, the textbook helps inform and promote evidence-based practice and improve clinical outcomes worldwide across all facets of the discipline.

The editors are supported by contributors who are internationally renowned specialists and ensure high quality and global perspective to the work. The evidence-based presentation of current diagnostic and therapeutic methods is complemented in the text by numerous treatment algorithms, giving the reader the knowledge and tools needed for effective clinical practice. Fourth Edition. Tim Chard and Richard Lilford. ISBN No. The authors of this book honestly and correctly admit, in their preface, that the underlying philosophy is to address only those facts which are neither speculative nor contentious. Surprisingly, in a subject which is full of speculation and contention there are pages of fact.

Over the years this book has provided an excellent starting point and end point for reading for Part I Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Having acknowledged the limitations of the book, it would be unreasonable of me to pick holes in specific sections. I recommend this book to all Part I Membership candidates. However, there are no references in this text. It contains only the most superficial knowledge and can act only as an aid memoire for this subject. This is a beautiful book. It consists of pages of extremely readable information on urogynaecology and the treatment of stress incontinence.

There is barely one page devoted to pelvic surgery. Despite the fact that there are twenty-seven authors in this short book, the editors have fulfilled their job magnificently: the terminology and thinking appear to be standardised throughout the entire text.
